Police Chief Urges Teens to Take Ebike Safety Classes

Updated: Apr 23, 2024

Looking for a sign that your teen needs ebike safety training? Police Chief LeBaron, Hermosa Beach, CA, tells parents: “A basic level of driver education can literally save lives.”

Hermosa Beach Chief of Police, Paul Lebaron, spoke with PedalAce to share his views on teenagers and ebike safety. Chief Lebaron knows a bit about this because Hermosa is an ebike town. An estimated 50% of middle school students drive an ebike to school, and then all over the streets and bike paths, too.

Hi, I'm Paul LeBaron, I’m the Police Chief for the Hermosa Beach Police Department.

The rising popularity of ebikes is bringing some inherent risks to our youth. Many of our young teens, that are eager for adventure, often times get on a bike, and they lack the basic understanding of the rules of the road.

I urge our teenagers to take safety classes that are specifically designed for ebike riders. A basic level of driver education can literally save lives.

Let's all work together to ensure the well-being of our youth, and we’ll make our streets safer for everyone.
